Kamdhenu Cow (Silver)
Hindu
mythology treats cows in very high regard. In ancient Hindu houses, every
house had a cow with a calf. It was believed that cows not only eat hay and
give milk but are the best examples of motherhood. Cows are regarded as divine
mothers of everyone. As per Vedas, a cow is considered to be home to more than
33 crore Gods and Goddesses. There is a story behind this.
After
Treta Yug, when the Kalyug was about to start, all the Gods and Goddesses along
with their incarnations were sure that they had created a universe for their
inhabitants to live in and create their complete families and generations while
living with the rules and regulations they had learned from the Gods and
Goddesses. The problem arose when people became too attached to guidance, mentorship,
and a leading figure and started requesting their Gods and Goddesses to not
leave them and started bribing them with offerings and whatever they could to
make them stay. The Gods knew that they couldn't stay. So they tried to convey
the same to their people. But the people were adamant and they wanted some type
of memorial of Gods by which they can live and abide by.
The
Gods were not sure what they should do. So Lord Brahma came up with a solution.
He was known for his wits and instant intelligent ideas. He told all the divine
figures to put one of their most important feature in his wife, Goddess
Saraswati's vehicle, a cow. This way, every part of the cow will have something
that will belong to a particular God or Goddess and the wish of the people will
also be completed. All Gods were happy for the same, but Narad Muni, a saint
known for his intelligent line of questioning, asked why only a cow? Why not a
dog? Or any other animal for that matter? Or any other thing? To which Lord
Brahma replied that when the people wanted their Gods to wait, they were
offering bribes in the form of materialistic things. This meant, they believed
they could buy anything with the money and are extremely materialistic and
money-minded. Thus, Goddess Lakshmi's vehicle cow will be best for the
people as a representation of something they will hold on to very dearly in the
greed of getting richer, if not for their Gods and Goddesses. This satisfied
all the people and finally, all the Gods blessed the Dhenu (cow) of Goddess
Lakshmi with something they were known for.
They
sent this cow and named it Kamdhenu (a cow that is a provider of
all materialistic gains) for its holders and worshippers. Hence, all Indian
households made it a point to keep as many cows as possible in their homes to
keep their Gods and their blessings near themselves. But with the rapidly
increasing need for space and lack of resources and time, it became very
difficult for people to hold a cow and a calf and feed them daily as well as
keep them in a restricted place of living. So, a representation of the cow is
highly advised for a great lifestyle, growth and happiness.
